What each ingredient does

Flour
Dusted on top to help form a light, lightly browned crust over the filling.
Butter
Adds richness and fat to the seasoned beef, softening the filling as it bakes.
Boiled round of beef
Forms the main body of the pie, providing savory flavor and substance.
Gravy or water
Moistens the chopped beef so it does not dry out while baking.

The step that matters

Moistening the beef filling. Cold boiled beef dries out easily in the oven. Adding gravy or water before covering keeps the meat tender and the filling juicy as it bakes.

Swap the onion

The recipe marks onion as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (biscuit, beef, pepper, butter, flour):

  1. Chivefits better
  2. Arrowrootfits better
  3. Spinachfits about as well
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against biscuit, beef, pepper, butter, flour. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
