Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chestnuts
Provide the bulk and starchy, mealy body of the stuffing.
Butter
Adds richness and fat that carries flavor and keeps the stuffing moist.
Cream
Adds moisture and a smooth, soft texture to the mashed chestnuts.
Cracker crumbs
Soak up liquid and fat to give the stuffing structure and a light binding.

The step that matters

Mash the chestnuts while they are hot. Cooked chestnuts turn stiff and grainy as they cool, so mashing them through a ricer while still warm gives a smooth texture. Draining them well also matters, since excess water would make the stuffing soggy.

Swap the chestnut

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, butter, cream):
