Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Provides the structure that sets the batter into a tender pancake.
Eggs
Bind the batter and help it set and hold its shape when cooked.
Milk
Thins the batter to a pourable consistency and adds moisture.
Melted butter
Greases the pan and adds richness and browning to the pancake surface.

The step that matters

Whisking and resting the batter. Whisking for 5 minutes and then resting the strained batter for 30 minutes lets the flour hydrate and the gluten relax, giving a smoother, more tender pancake with fewer lumps.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (flour, sugar, egg, milk, vanilla, rum, butter):

  1. Bananafits better
  2. Figfits better
  3. Coconutfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against flour, sugar, egg, milk, vanilla, rum, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
