Beer Steak Pie

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Roll out the puff pastry and lay it in a large dish, creating a border.

  3. Trim the steak of any coarse skin and cut it into pieces, seasoning with salt, cayenne, and nutmeg or mace.

  4. Layer the seasoned steak in the dish, placing a small piece of butter in each piece.

  5. Place the hard-boiled eggs, cut in half, on top of the steak, and season with more salt and spices.

  6. Pour in enough cold water or veal broth to create gravy.

  7. Roll out the pastry cover to ¾ inch thick, secure it around the edges, and decorate as desired.

  8. Bake the pie for 1 to 1.5 hours until golden brown.
