Fruit Cake

Oven, in the book's wordsA moderate oven

Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a moderate oven”. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour with the baking powder.

  3. Make a well in the center and add the warmed butter and molasses.

  4. Mix well with your hands, adding the fruit last after it has been floured.

  5. Pour the batter into a greased loaf pan.

  6. Bake for 2 hours.

  7. While the cake is still warm, pour ½ cup of wine over it.
