  1. Thoroughly grease the cake tins, then grease again and wipe with a coarse towel.

  2. In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar together.

  3. Gradually add the milk, then the egg whites, flour, cream of tartar, and baking soda.

  4. Mix well and pour into the prepared jelly tins.

  5. To prepare the filling, blanch and pound the almonds.

  6. In another bowl, beat the egg whites and yolks together lightly.

  7. Add 1½ cups sugar, the pounded almonds, and vanilla to the egg mixture.

  8. Spread the filling between the layers of the cake.
