Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Carrots
Hold their shape when diced and add natural sweetness as they cook.
Turnips
Keep a firm texture in the soup and add a mild, earthy flavor.
Celery
Adds a crisp-tender texture and a savory, aromatic note.
Stock
Forms the liquid base of the soup and carries the flavor of the vegetables.

The step that matters

Cut the vegetables into uniform pieces. Even pieces cook at the same rate, so none turns mushy while others stay firm. Cutting them evenly also helps the soup look and eat consistently.

Swap the turnip

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (carrot, celery, pepper):

  1. Parsnipfits about as well
  2. Turnipthe original
  3. Capsicumfits about as well
  4. Spinachfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against carrot, celery, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
