Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cream
Adds richness and a smooth, silky body to the sauce.
Butter
Adds fat and flavour, and helps form the sauce base with the flour.
Flour
Thickens the gravy into a smooth sauce as it boils.
Hard-boiled eggs
Add body and a soft, rich texture to the minced mixture.

The step that matters

Stir until it boils. Flour must be stirred continuously as the mixture heats so it disperses evenly; otherwise it forms lumps and the sauce thickens unevenly.
