Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Clams
Provide the main flavor and texture of the soup as they cook in the broth.
Milk
Forms the creamy body of the soup and mellows its seasoning.
Flour
Thickens the soup into a smooth, creamy consistency when mixed with cold milk first.
Butter
Adds richness and a rounded, savory flavor to the finished soup.

The step that matters

Stirring in the flour cream. Flour added directly to hot liquid clumps instead of thickening evenly. Mixing it with cold milk first to form a smooth paste lets the starch disperse and thicken the soup without lumps.

Swap the mace

The recipe marks mace as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (clam, milk, flour, butter, egg, pepper, lemon):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against clam, milk, flour, butter, egg, pepper, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
