Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Bread crumbs
Thicken the milk into a soft sauce, while the fried portion adds crisp, golden texture.
Milk
Forms the liquid base that the bread crumbs swell and thicken into a sauce.
Butter
Fries the reserved bread crumbs, adding richness and browning them to a golden crunch.
Grated onion
Adds savory aroma and flavor to the milk as it heats.

The step that matters

Frying the reserved bread crumbs. Crumbs fried in butter can burn quickly before they turn golden. Cooking them over moderate heat until dry and golden gives even browning and a crisp texture rather than a bitter, scorched taste.
