Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Provide the main body of the salad and their juice moistens the dressing.
Cucumbers
Add cool, crisp texture and fresh moisture to the stacks.
French dressing or mayonnaise dressing
Adds fat and acidity that carry flavour across the tomato and cucumber.

The step that matters

Blanching and draining the tomatoes. Boiling water loosens the skin, but leaving tomatoes in too long begins to cook the flesh and soften them. Draining immediately keeps them firm enough to slice into neat stacks.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (cucumber, lettuce, pepper):

  1. Beetrootfits better
  2. Spinachfits better
  3. Mustardfits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against cucumber, lettuce, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
