Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Roast-beef bone
Releases gelatin and savoury flavour into the broth during long gentle simmering.
Turkey or chicken
Adds meat flavour and body to the broth as it cooks down.
Carrots
Contribute sweetness and body, and thicken the soup when mashed through the strainer.
Turnips
Add mild sweetness and starch, helping thicken the soup when mashed through the strainer.
Flour
Thickens the soup as its starch swells in the simmering liquid.

The step that matters

Boiling the flour and water into the soup. Flour must be fully stirred in before boiling so no lumps form, and the soup must boil for the full 10 minutes so the starch swells and cooks out its raw taste.
