Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lamb
Provides the main meat, which becomes tender through slow, gentle stewing.
Salt pork
Adds fat and savory flavor that enriches the broth and gravy.
Potatoes
Absorb flavor from the broth and add body and starch to the stew.
Flour
Thickens the gravy as its starch swells in the hot liquid.

The step that matters

Thicken the gravy with flour moistened with milk. Flour added dry clumps when it hits hot liquid. Mixing it smooth with milk first lets the starch disperse evenly, so the gravy thickens without lumps.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (lamb, pork, pepper, potato, biscuit, flour, milk):

  2. Spinachfits better
