Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Cooked briefly in the butter, it thickens the milk into a smooth sauce.
Butter
Forms the fat base that the flour is cooked into before the milk is added.
Milk
Forms the liquid that the flour and butter thicken into the body of the sauce.
Grated cheese
Melts into the thickened base to give the sauce its flavor and rich texture.

The step that matters

Adding the milk gradually while stirring. Adding liquid slowly while stirring constantly keeps the flour dispersed, so the sauce thickens smoothly without lumps.
