Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Butter
Creamed with sugar to trap air and add richness and tenderness.
Sugar
Creams with butter for a fine texture and adds sweetness and browning.
Eggs
Bind the batter and add structure and moisture as the bars set.
Flour
Provides the structure that holds the bars together once baked.
Chocolate
Adds deep flavour and richness to the batter.

The step that matters

Cut into squares while hot. Cutting while hot keeps the bars from crumbling; the structure is still soft, and cooling on a rack lets them firm up without losing their shape.
