Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a hot oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

Prepare

  1. Make a tea biscuit mixture using 2 tablespoons of fat and 1 cup of flour.

  2. Roll out the dough thick and cut it into rounds with a medium-sized cookie cutter.

  3. On one half of each round, place one-half of a date rolled in fruit sugar. Fold the dough over.

Bake

  1. Place in a baking pan.

  2. Bake in a hot oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15 to 20 minutes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Flour
Forms the dough structure that holds the folded date filling together.
Fat
Tenderizes the biscuit dough, giving it a short, flaky texture.
Dates
Provide sweetness and moisture inside the folded biscuit.
Fruit sugar
Sweetens the dates and adds light browning on the outside during baking.

The step that matters

Fold the dough over. The dough must be sealed around the date so the filling does not leak or dry out during baking.
