Filtered or Drip Coffee

Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the filter

  1. Make a small iron ring to fit the top of the coffee pot inside.

  2. Sew a small muslin bag to the ring, ensuring the muslin is not too thin.

  3. Fit the bag into the pot and pour some boiling water into it to warm the pot.

Brew

  1. Add the ground coffee into the bag.

  2. Pour the required amount of boiling water over the coffee gradually.

  3. Close the lid and wait for all the water to filter through.

  4. Remove the bag and serve the coffee.

What each ingredient does

Finely ground coffee
Provides the flavour compounds that the hot water extracts into the brewed drink.
Boiling water
Acts as the solvent that dissolves flavour and aroma compounds from the ground coffee.

The step that matters

Pour the water gradually over the coffee. Pouring slowly and evenly wets all the grounds so they extract uniformly. Pouring too fast can channel water past the grounds, leaving the brew weak and under-extracted.
