Stuffed Tomatoes

Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Peel the tomatoes and cut them in half, removing the hard center.

  3. Place the tomatoes in a fireproof dish with butter or salad oil.

Stuff and bake

  1. In a bowl, mix breadcrumbs, chopped ham, parsley, marjoram, thyme, minced onion, pepper, and salt. Use a 2:1 ratio of breadcrumbs to ham.

  2. Spoon the mixture over the tomatoes to cover them.

  3. Drizzle a little more butter or salad oil on top.

  4. Bake for a few minutes until golden and heated through.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Form the edible shell that holds the filling and softens as it bakes.
Breadcrumbs
Absorb juices and give the filling body so it holds its shape.
Ham
Adds savory, salty flavor to the breadcrumb filling.
Butter or salad oil
Carries fat for browning the topping and adds richness.

The step that matters

Bake for a few minutes until golden and heated through. Baking only briefly means the tomatoes can stay watery or the filling may not reach serving heat, so check for golden color and a hot center.
