Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Sugar
Sweetens the syrup and thickens it as the water reduces, giving the compote body.
Fresh strawberries
Provide the main fruit flavour and juicy texture of the dish.
Whipped cream
Adds richness and a soft, airy contrast to the chilled fruit.
Maraschino liqueur
Adds a sweet, almond-like aroma and flavour to the syrup.

The step that matters

Reducing the syrup by two-thirds. Boiling concentrates the sugar and removes water. If it is reduced too little, the syrup stays thin and dilutes the strawberries; if reduced too far, it can turn sticky or crystallise as it cools.

Swap the nuts

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, cream, pistachio):

  1. Cashew nutfits better
  2. Almondfits better
  3. Hazelnutfits better
  4. Nutsthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, cream, pistachio. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
