Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Heavy cream
Whipped, it gives the charlotte its light, airy body.
Gelatin
Sets the cream mixture so the charlotte holds its shape when chilled.
Baker's chocolate
Provides the main chocolate flavor and firms the filling as it thickens.
Powdered sugar
Sweetens the chocolate filling.
Lady fingers
Form the outer structure and shell that holds the filling.

The step that matters

Dissolve the gelatin fully before combining. Gelatin must dissolve completely in hot liquid, or it forms rubbery specks and the filling will not set evenly. Undissolved gelatin does not set the cream properly.
