Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rhubarb
Forms the body of the soup and gives it a tart, acidic flavour.
Butter
Adds fat for richness and helps soften the onions and carrot gently.
Consommé
Supplies the liquid base that the vegetables stew and cook in.
Bread crumbs
Thicken the soup as they absorb liquid and cook down.
Onions
Add savoury sweetness and aroma as they soften during stewing.

The step that matters

Stew gently over low heat until tender. Gentle heat softens the rhubarb and vegetables evenly without scorching the butter or sugars, and keeps the soup smooth once passed through a tamis.
