Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Round steak
Lean beef that is beaten to tenderize it and browns well under high heat.
Onion
Softens and browns in butter, adding sweetness and savoury depth to the sauce.
Ripe tomatoes
Provide the bulk, acidity and body of the sauce once mashed and simmered.
Butter
Adds richness and a glossy finish to the steak and browns the onions.

The step that matters

Browning the steak under high heat. A very hot broiler browns the surface quickly and builds flavour before the interior overcooks. Turning once gives an even crust on both sides.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, pepper, onion, tomato, garlic):

  1. Thymefits better
  2. Parsleyfits better
  3. Cuminfits better
  4. Clovethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, pepper, onion, tomato, garlic. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
