  2. Bake for 90 minutes.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Chicken
Provides the main protein and meaty body of the filling.
Potatoes
Add starch that thickens the juices and gives the filling substance.
Butter
Adds fat and richness, carrying flavor through the layers.
Dough crust
Forms a sealed top that traps steam and bakes to a golden, flaky shell.

The step that matters

Cutting slits in the crust. Slits let steam escape during baking. Without them, trapped steam can make the crust soggy or push it up unevenly, and the filling may boil over.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, pepper, butter):

  1. Capsicumfits about as well
  2. Potatothe original
  3. Onionfits less well
  4. Tomatofits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, pepper, butter. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
