What each ingredient does

Toast
Toasting browns the bread and adds a toasted, roasted aroma to the water.
Boiling water
Extracts flavour and colour from the toasted bread as it steeps.
Sugar
Adds sweetness to balance the toasty flavour, added to taste.

The step that matters

Let it steep until cold. Steeping long enough lets the toast release its flavour and colour into the water. Covering the container keeps aromas in and limits evaporation while it cools.
