Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Ginger root
Provides the main spicy flavour and aroma of the drink.
White sugar
Adds sweetness and provides food for the yeast to ferment.
Tartaric acid
Adds a sharp, tangy acidity that balances the sweetness.
Yeast
Ferments the sugar, producing carbonation and developing flavour.
Lemon oil
Adds a bright citrus aroma to the drink.

The step that matters

Keeping out sediments when bottling. Sediment left from the overnight rest, including settled yeast and ginger particles, makes the beer cloudy and can keep fermenting in the bottle. Skimming the foam and pouring off the clear liquid leaves it behind.

Swap the ginger

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, egg, lemon):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Dillfits about as well
  4. Gingerthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, egg, lemon. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
