Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cold cooked chicken
Forms the bulk of the salad and provides its main texture and protein.
Vinegar
Seasons the chicken with a sharp acidity that brightens the flavor.
Celery
Adds crisp texture and a fresh, mild crunch to the salad.
Mayonnaise dressing
Binds the chicken and celery and adds richness and moisture.

The step that matters

Refrigerate the seasoned chicken for 2–3 hours. Chilling gives the vinegar, salt, and pepper time to soak into the meat, so the flavor penetrates rather than sitting on the surface. Keeping the chicken cold also helps the salad stay fresh and safe to serve.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, vinegar, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, vinegar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
