Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cold beef
Provides the meaty base and savoury flavour of the hash.
Cold boiled potatoes
Bulk and starch that soften during simmering and help thicken the hash.
Wheat flour
Thickens the moisture from the gravy or water as the mixture simmers.
Gravy or hot water
Moistens the mixture so it cooks through without drying out.

The step that matters

Stirring during the simmer. Flour and meat juices settle on the base of the pan and scorch easily over heat. Stirring occasionally keeps the mixture moving, prevents burning, and gives an even texture.
