What each ingredient does

Ripe grapes
Provide the juice and sugars that yeast ferments into alcohol.
White sugar
Feeds the yeast during fermentation, producing alcohol and carbon dioxide.
Water
Dilutes the grape juice and makes up the bulk of the liquid to ferment.

The step that matters

Cork the container tightly once fermented. A tight seal keeps air out so oxygen does not spoil the wine, while still letting the fermentation finish under controlled conditions.
