Ingredients

Directions

The book says “a quick oven”. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps is the modern equivalent, not the book's own figure.

  1. Take a piece of dough the size of an ordinary loaf.

  2. Knead the dough for twice as long as directed for the bread.

  3. Form the dough into small, even balls.

  4. Place the balls in greased gem-pans.

  5. Cover and set in a warm place until they rise to more than double their original size.

  6. Bake in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 20 to 25 minutes.

  7. Watch and turn them to ensure even browning.

  8. Serve hot, breaking them apart instead of cutting with a knife.
