Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Lemon or lime juice
Provides acidity that balances the sweetness of the sugar.
Loaf sugar
Sweetens the punch and, once dissolved, gives it a smooth body.
Jamaica rum
Adds a strong, full-bodied spirit flavour that anchors the punch.
Cognac
Contributes warm, fruity aromatic notes to the spirit blend.
Peach brandy
Adds sweet stone-fruit aroma and flavour to the blend.

The step that matters

Stir until the sugar is fully dissolved. Undissolved sugar settles to the bottom, leaving the punch gritty and unevenly sweet. Thorough stirring lets the sugar dissolve fully into the liquid, giving a smooth, consistent sweetness throughout the bowl.
