Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cocoa
Provides the chocolate flavour and dark colour of the frosting.
Confectioners sugar
Sweetens the frosting and helps it set to a smooth, spreadable texture.
Butter
Adds fat for a rich mouthfeel and smooth texture.
Milk
Adds moisture so the sugar and cocoa dissolve into a fluid mixture.

The step that matters

Boil for about eight minutes. Boiling dissolves the sugar and cooks off water so the frosting sets glossy and fudgy once beaten. Boiling too short leaves it runny; too long makes it stiff and grainy as it cools.

Swap the cocoa

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, sugar, milk, vanilla):

  1. Almondfits about as well
  2. Cocoathe original
  3. Chestnutfits about as well
  4. Hazelnutfits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against butter, sugar, milk, vanilla. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
