Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Beef
Releases flavor and gelatin into the broth during long, gentle simmering.
Breast of mutton
Adds rich, savory meat flavor to the broth during simmering.
Onions
Contribute sweetness and aromatic depth to the broth as they cook.
Leeks
Add a mild, sweet onion-like aroma to the broth.
Turnips
Add mild sweetness and body to the broth as they soften.

The step that matters

Skimming the broth. Foam and fat rise to the surface as the broth heats. Skimming early and again before serving keeps the soup clear and prevents a greasy, cloudy result.

Swap the clove

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, mutton, pepper, carrot, turnip, onion, celery):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Thymefits better
  3. Marjoramfits better
