What each ingredient does

Lemon juice
Provides the sharp acidity that defines the punch's flavor.
Syrup
Adds sweetness to balance the acidic citrus juices.
Rum
Adds aroma and flavor, and lowers the freezing point so the punch stays slushy.
Orange juice
Adds extra citrus acidity and fruity sweetness.

The step that matters

Serve while still liquid and frothy. Alcohol and sugar lower the freezing point, so the mixture stays slushy longer. If it freezes hard, it becomes difficult to scoop and loses its light, frothy texture.

Swap the lemon

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (syrup, orange, rum):

Fit is the average pairing score against syrup, orange, rum. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
