  1. Butter the sides of a deep dish.

  2. Cover the bottom with thin slices of cheese.

  3. Layer very thin slices of buttered bread on top.

  4. Sprinkle with a little red pepper and mustard.

  5. Add another layer of cheese.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Egg yolk beaten into cream sets during baking to give the dish a custard-like body.
Cream
Adds moisture and richness, so the layers bake into a tender, custardy texture.
Thin slices of cheese
Melts between the bread layers and browns on top, adding richness and savory flavor.
Thin slices of bread
Forms the layers that soak up the cream mixture and hold the dish together.

The step that matters

Pour the egg and cream mixture just before baking. Egg proteins set with heat, and standing too long lets the bread soak unevenly and the custard lose its loose, even texture before the oven.

Swap the mustard

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (butter, cheese, bread, pepper, egg, cream):

  1. Potatofits better
  2. Asparagusfits better
