Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Pumpkin
Forms the body of the soup, giving it bulk and a sweet, earthy flavour when cooked soft.
Milk
Adds creaminess and liquid, mellowing the pumpkin into a smooth, rich soup.
Butter
Adds fat for a richer mouthfeel and a rounder, smoother taste.
Bread
Soaks up the hot soup, adding body and a soft, absorbent texture when served over it.

The step that matters

Passing the pumpkin through a colander. Cooked pumpkin is fibrous, and pressing it through a colander breaks the fibres into a smooth pulp. Skipping this leaves the soup stringy and coarse.

Swap the mace

The recipe marks mace as optional. How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pumpkin, milk, butter, pepper, sugar, bread):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegfits better
  3. Cardamomfits better
  4. Macethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against pumpkin, milk, butter, pepper, sugar, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
