Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Break down during simmering to give the strained soup body and thickness.
Milk
Adds richness and a creamy, mellow texture to the finished soup.
Beef stock
Provides the savory meaty base that carries the flavour of the soup.
Onions
Contribute sweetness and aromatic depth as they soften in the broth.
Tomatoes
Add acidity and fruity brightness that balances the sweet root vegetables.

The step that matters

Strain the vegetables through a sieve. Pressing the cooked vegetables through a sieve breaks them into a smooth purée that thickens the broth. Skipping or rushing this leaves the soup thin and chunky.

Swap the tomato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (beef, carrot, turnip, onion, parsley, milk, potato):

  1. Leekfits better
  2. Parsnipfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Tomatothe original

Fit is the average pairing score against beef, carrot, turnip, onion, parsley, milk, potato. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
