Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Tomatoes
Form the edible shell and provide the juicy, fresh body of the salad.
Cucumber
Adds cool, crisp texture that contrasts with the soft tomato filling.
Thick mayonnaise
Adds richness and fat, giving a creamy topping that balances the acidity of the tomato.

The step that matters

Salting the cucumber. Soaking the minced cucumber in strong salt water draws out moisture and firms its texture. If it is skipped, the cucumber can release water into the filling and make the salad soggy.

Flavor stand-ins for the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (tomato, cucumber, pepper, celery, parsley):

  1. Carrotbetter flavor fit
  2. Capsicumbetter flavor fit
  3. Lettucebetter flavor fit
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against tomato, cucumber, pepper, celery, parsley. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
