What each ingredient does

Finely ground coffee
Provides the flavour and aroma that the hot water extracts from the grounds.
Boiling water
Dissolves the flavour compounds from the coffee grounds as it passes through them.

The step that matters

Sew the muslin bag with cloth that is not too thin. A thin muslin lets fine coffee particles pass through into the pot, making the drink cloudy and gritty. A sturdier weave holds the grounds back while the water still flows freely.
