Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Whipped yolks and whites thicken the drink and give it a rich, creamy body.
Sugar
Sweetens the eggnog and helps stabilize the whipped eggs.
Milk
Forms the liquid base that carries the other ingredients and adds creaminess.
Brandy
Adds alcoholic flavor and aroma and helps preserve the drink.
Egg whites
Whipped whites add lightness and a foamy, airy texture.

The step that matters

Folding in the whipped whites. Whipped whites hold air, which gives lightness. Stirring them in vigorously knocks out that air, so fold gently until just combined to keep the texture light.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (egg, sugar, milk, brandy):

  1. Cinnamonfits better
  2. Nutmegthe original
  3. Gingerfits less well
  4. Clovefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, sugar, milk, brandy. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
