Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 350°F (175°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare the base

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Mix the parsley, onion, and part of the gravy in a bowl, then season with salt and pepper.

  3. Pour the mixture into a pie dish and bake until it begins to bubble.

Add the eggs and finish

  1. Carefully break the eggs into the dish, then sprinkle bread crumbs on top.

  2. Return the dish to the oven and bake for three minutes.

  3. Warm the remaining gravy and pour it into the dish.

  4. Sprinkle more bread crumbs on top and bake until the eggs are set.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Eggs
Set into a firm, tender structure as they bake, forming the body of the dish.
Gravy
Adds moisture and savory flavor, keeping the base from drying out in the oven.
Bread crumbs
Form a golden, crisp top layer as they toast in the oven.
Onion
Adds savory sweetness and aroma as it softens and cooks into the base.
Butter
Adds richness and fat, contributing flavor and a smooth mouthfeel.

The step that matters

Bake the eggs until set. Egg whites set at around 140–150°F while yolks thicken more gently. Pulling the dish too early leaves runny whites, while overbaking makes the yolks dry and rubbery.

Swap the onion

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (parsley, butter, egg, pepper, bread):

  1. Shallotfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Chivefits better
  4. Onionthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against parsley, butter, egg, pepper, bread. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
