Ingredients

Directions

Prepare the spinach

  1. Remove the stalks from the spinach leaves.

  2. Wash the leaves in cold water two or three times.

  3. Drain the spinach in a colander.

  4. Place the spinach in a large saucepan, sprinkle with salt, and boil for 10 minutes without adding water.

  5. Drain the spinach again and press out all the water.

  6. Chop the spinach finely or rub it through a wire sieve if preferred.

Make the creamed spinach

  1. In a stewpan, melt 1 ounce of butter, then add the spinach, pepper, salt, and cream, mixing well.

  2. Heat the mixture on the stove until hot.

Fry the bread and serve

  1. Cut the bread into triangular pieces and fry in 2 ounces of butter until pale brown.

  2. Arrange the fried bread around a hot vegetable dish and serve the spinach in the center.

Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Spinach
Forms the main body of the dish and carries most of its flavour and bulk.
Butter
Adds fat and richness to the spinach and browns the bread.
Cream
Adds moisture and a smooth, rich texture to the chopped spinach.
Bread
Provides a crisp, golden contrast to the soft spinach.

The step that matters

Press out all the water from the spinach. Spinach holds a lot of water after boiling. If it is not pressed dry, the cream will thin and the dish will be watery rather than thick and creamy.
