Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Releases starch as it cooks, slightly thickening the broth and adding body.
Irish potato
Its starch softens into the broth, adding body and mild sweetness.
Tomatoes
Add acidity and a rounded, savory tomato flavor to the broth.
Celery root
Adds earthy, celery-like aroma and flavor to the broth.
Spaghetti
Adds texture and body as the pasta softens in the hot broth.
Onions
Build savory aroma and depth in the broth as they cook.

The step that matters

Simmer the broth slowly. A gentle simmer draws flavor from the bone into the water while keeping the broth clear. A hard, rolling boil makes it cloudy and can toughen the meat and emulsify fat into the liquid.

Swap the cabbage

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (pepper, rice, potato, tomato, celery, onion, parsley):

  1. Carrotfits better
  2. Okrafits better
  3. Capsicumfits better

Fit is the average pairing score against pepper, rice, potato, tomato, celery, onion, parsley. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
