Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Dried lima beans
Provide the main body and protein-rich bulk that holds the loaf together.
Rice
Absorbs liquid and adds starch, helping the loaf set firm when baked.
Onion
Adds savory depth and moisture as it softens during cooking.
Carrot
Adds moisture and mild sweetness, and helps bind the mixture.

The step that matters

Pass the bean mixture through a meat chopper. Mashing the cooked beans finely lets them bind with the rice and other ingredients. Coarse pieces won't hold together, so the loaf can crumble when sliced.

Swap the lima beans

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (onion, carrot, mustard, rice, ketchup):

  1. Beansfits better
  2. Sesamefits better
  3. Lentilsfits better
  4. Lima beansthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against onion, carrot, mustard, rice, ketchup. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
