Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Potatoes
Provide starch and body, giving the liquid a thick, smooth texture.
Hops
Add bitterness and aroma, and help preserve the liquid.
White sugar
Feeds the yeast, driving fermentation and producing carbon dioxide.
Yeast
Ferments the sugars, producing carbon dioxide and alcohol that leaven the liquid.

The step that matters

Add the yeast at blood-warm. Yeast works best at moderate warmth. If the mixture is too hot it can kill the yeast, and if it is too cold fermentation will be slow or stall.

Swap the potato

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (hops, sugar, ginger):

  1. Mustardfits better
  2. Capsicumfits better
  3. Sweet potatofits better
