Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Rice
Forms a starchy, absorbent coating that holds its shape around each orange while it cooks.
Oranges
Provide the juicy, aromatic fruit centre that flavours the dish.
Sifted sugar
Adds sweetness on the surface as a finishing touch.

The step that matters

Removing the white inner skin from the oranges. The white pith is bitter, so leaving it on can make the fruit taste harsh. Removing it completely keeps the orange flavour clean and sweet.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (rice, sugar):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Coconutfits better
  3. Raisinfits better
  4. Orangethe original

Fit is the average pairing score against rice, sugar. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
