Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Veal
Provides the main meaty structure and bulk of the loaf.
Salt pork
Adds fat and moisture, keeping the lean meat from drying out during baking.
Eggs
Bind the mixture together so the loaf holds its shape when sliced.
Butter crackers
Absorb liquid and add body, helping the loaf stay tender and cohesive.

The step that matters

Pour the broth until it reaches the top. Adding enough liquid keeps the lean meat moist as it bakes. Too little leaves the loaf dry and crumbly, while the eggs and crackers set the structure around it.

Swap the nutmeg

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (veal, pork, butter, egg, pepper):

  1. Parsleyfits better
  2. Sagefits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Nutmegthe original

Fit is the average pairing score against veal, pork, butter, egg, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
