What each ingredient does

Hard-boiled eggs
Provide the main body and rich flavour of the salad as thick slices.
Mayonnaise
Adds fat and moisture, binding the layers and giving a creamy texture.
Lettuce
Adds crisp texture and freshness between the layers.
Capers
Add a sharp, briny acidity that cuts through the rich eggs and mayonnaise.
Cream
Whipped and mixed with mayonnaise, it adds lightness and extra richness.

  3. Nutmegabout as good a flavor fit

Fit is the average pairing score against egg, lettuce, beetroot, capers, bread, cream, sauce. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes. This compares flavor only: it does not check the job the ingredient does in the dish (bulk, moisture, acidity, structure).
