Ingredients

Directions

The book gives no oven temperature. The 400°F (200°C) in the steps was added when the recipe was transcribed, as a starting point.

Prepare

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. Cut off a portion of the stalk from the mushrooms.

  3. Peel the tops of the mushrooms.

Bake

  1. Place the mushrooms in a baking dish.

  2. Add a small piece of butter on each mushroom.

  3. Sprinkle with pepper.

  4. Bake for about 20 minutes, or longer for larger mushrooms.

Serve

  1. Serve immediately on a hot dish.

  2. Pile the mushrooms in the center of the dish.

  3. Pour gravy around the mushrooms.

What each ingredient does

Cup mushrooms
Form the main body of the dish, becoming tender and juicy as they bake.
Butter
Adds richness and moisture, melting over the mushrooms to carry flavor and encourage light browning.
