Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Loaf sugar
Dissolves into the water to form a syrup that sweetens the punch and keeps it from freezing solid.
Egg whites
Whipped stiff and folded in, they add a light, airy foam that softens the frozen texture.
Lemons
Juice and rind supply acidity and aroma that balance the sweet syrup.
Oranges
Juice and rind add sweetness, fragrance and additional acidity to the citrus base.
Rum or kirschwasser
Alcohol lowers the freezing point, keeping the punch softer and less icy when served.

The step that matters

Folding in the stiffly whipped egg whites. If the whites are under-whipped or the mixture is too firm or too warm, they will deflate or not blend in evenly, leaving a dense, uneven texture. Fold gently and freeze only briefly so the foam stays light.

Swap the orange

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (sugar, lemon, egg, rum):

  1. Vanillafits better
  2. Orangethe original
  3. Pineapplefits about as well
  4. Limefits less well

Fit is the average pairing score against sugar, lemon, egg, rum. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
