Ranks compare each pair with 20,000 random ingredient pairs on CompKitchen. How we score pairs

What each ingredient does

Cold roasted or boiled chicken
Forms the main body of the salad and gives it its protein bulk.
Vinegar
Adds acidity that seasons the chicken and brightens the flavour.
Oil
Adds fat that carries flavour and keeps the chicken moist.
Tender white celery
Provides crisp texture and fresh, mild flavour against the soft chicken.
Mayonnaise dressing
Adds fat and creaminess that binds the salad and moistens it.

The step that matters

Season the chicken and let it rest in the refrigerator. Acid and oil need time to penetrate the chicken pieces, so the seasoning spreads evenly through the meat rather than sitting on the surface. Keeping the celery chilled separately preserves its crispness until the salad is assembled.

Swap the celery

How well each one fits the dish's main ingredients (chicken, vinegar, pepper):

  1. Garlicfits better
  2. Tarragonfits better
  3. Thymefits about as well
  4. Celerythe original

Fit is the average pairing score against chicken, vinegar, pepper. Candidates are from the same food group and used in at least 100 recipes.
